From Devotion to Warfare - Module 4 | Lesson 1

Scripture Reference: Ephesians 4:11–13

Introduction

“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church, the body of Christ…” (Ephesians 4:11–13, NLT)

JFN Empower is an in-house training program designed to equip every disciple of Jesus to do God’s work and build up His church. This journey consists of 8 modules aimed at helping believers grow in spiritual maturity, purpose, and effectiveness.

Module 4, From Devotion to Warfare, focuses on strengthening our relationship with God and understanding how devotion fuels spiritual authority.

The Meaning and Power of Devotion

Scripture References: Titus 2:11–13, Colossians 4:2

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to live lives devoted to God. This includes:

  • Prayer

  • Worship

  • Studying the Word

  • Fasting

  • Spiritual disciplines

Without devotion, it is impossible to truly know God or understand His will.

A strong devotional life becomes the foundation for:

  • Intercession

  • Spiritual warfare

  • Discernment

  • Authority in prayer

Devotion is not just a routine — it is a relationship.

What Does “Devotion” Mean?

The Greek word Proskartereo means:

  • To persevere

  • To remain steadfast

  • To cling to God

  • To be faithful and committed

True devotion includes loyalty, obedience, and consistent pursuit of God.

Building a Lifestyle of Devotion

A relationship with God is ongoing, but intentional time with Him is essential.

Jesus Himself modeled this by often withdrawing to spend time with the Father.

To grow in devotion:

  • Set aside daily time with God

  • Choose a consistent place

  • Be intentional and disciplined

  • Prioritize His presence

God invites us into deeper intimacy so we can grow in faith, purpose, and spiritual authority.

The Lord’s Prayer: A Model for Effective Prayer

Scripture Reference: Matthew 6:9–13

Prayer is not just speaking to God — it is a conversation. The Greek word Proseuchomai means:

  • To communicate with God

  • To make requests

  • To expect response and dialogue

The Lord’s Prayer serves as a framework for powerful and effective prayer.

Six Key Aspects of the Lord’s Prayer

1. Praise and Worship

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.”

Begin with worship and thanksgiving. This is where we:

  • Honour God

  • Express gratitude

  • Declare His greatness

Worship positions our hearts correctly before God.

2. Intercession and Alignment with God’s Will

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

This is where we:

  • Align with God’s purposes

  • Pray for others

  • Stand in the gap

Intercession is not optional — it is the responsibility of every believer.

3. Receiving God’s Provision

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

God cares about our needs.

This includes:

  • Physical provision

  • Spiritual nourishment

  • Direction and guidance

We depend on Him daily.

4. Introspection and Self-Examination

“Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors…”

This is a moment to:

  • Reflect honestly

  • Confess sin

  • Repent

  • Forgive others

God strengthens us in our weaknesses and helps us grow.

5. Spiritual Warfare

“Deliver us from the evil one.”

Spiritual warfare is real.

We are called to:

  • Resist the enemy

  • Stand firm in faith

  • Use spiritual authority

Our weapons are not physical, but powerful through God.

6. Alignment with Our Purpose

“For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory…”

We are here to:

  • Advance God’s Kingdom

  • Operate in His power

  • Give Him all the glory

We are not building our own lives — we are fulfilling His purpose.

From Devotion to Spiritual Authority

A life of devotion leads to:

  • Stronger prayer life

  • Greater spiritual sensitivity

  • Authority in intercession

  • Effectiveness in spiritual warfare

You cannot separate devotion from power.Private time with God produces public impact.

Reflection Questions (For Individuals & Cell Groups)

  1. Why is it important for believers to be equipped and empowered according to Ephesians 4:11–13?

  2. How would you define your current devotional life? What needs to change?

  3. Can you pray the Lord’s Prayer from memory?

  4. What does Proseuchomai mean, and how does it change your view of prayer?

  5. Name and explain the six aspects of the Lord’s Prayer.

Final Encouragement

God is calling you deeper.

Devotion is not about obligation — it’s about relationship. As you grow in intimacy with Him, you will grow in authority, clarity, and purpose.

Your private devotion will shape your public impact.

Stay consistent. Stay hungry. Stay devoted.
