Introduction: The Meaning of Biblical Intercession
“Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:9–10, NKJV)
Intercession is a central part of the Lord’s Prayer. It is not random prayer—it is precise, Spirit-led partnership with God.
The Greek word for intercession, enteuxis, points to prayers that “hit the mark”—like striking a bullseye. In contrast, the Greek word for sin (hamartia) means “to miss the mark.”
What This Means
True intercession is:
Aligning with God’s will
Praying with precision
Partnering with heaven
At its core:
We pray for God’s will to be done
On earth as it is in heaven
In our lives and in others
Intercession brings God’s kingdom into real situations—our families, churches, communities, and nations.
The Act of Intercession
1. It Flows from Relationship with Jesus
Intercession begins with:
Worship
Intimacy
Fellowship with God
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit Himself intercedes for us.” (Romans 8:26)
We don’t start with requests—we start with God.
2. It Means Standing in the Gap
To intercede is to stand between:
God’s will
And current reality
“I looked for someone… who would stand in the gap…” (Ezekiel 22:30)
Intercessors:
Represent people before God
Carry situations in prayer
Partner with God for change
3. It Means Praying What Is on God’s Heart
Intercession is not about our opinions.
It is about:
Hearing God
Carrying His burden
Echoing His heart
Jesus modelled this perfectly:“I do nothing on My own… I speak just what the Father has taught Me.” (John 8:28)
4. It Means Praying the Word of God
God’s Word reveals His will.
“So shall My word be… it shall accomplish what I please.” (Isaiah 55:11)
When we pray Scripture:
We pray accurately
We align with God
We “hit the bullseye”
The Intercession of the Holy Spirit and Jesus
Scripture Reference: Romans 8:26–28
The Holy Spirit:
Intercedes for us
Prays perfectly according to God’s will
Helps us when we don’t know what to pray
Jesus:
Is our High Priest
Continually intercedes for us (Hebrews 7:25)
Represents us before the Father
Because of this:
We are invited into partnership with heaven
We are called a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9)
Intercession is not optional—it is part of our identity.
Intercession: The Heart of Spiritual Warfare
Scripture Reference: Ephesians 6:18–20
Intercession is where spiritual warfare becomes active.
Paul instructs us to:
Pray always
Pray in the Spirit
Stay alert
Persevere
Intercede for others
A Key Insight
After describing the armor of God, Paul immediately speaks about prayer.
Why?Because:
The armor prepares us
Intercession activates the battle
Even Paul asked others to pray for him—showing that no one stands alone.
Moses: A Picture of Intercessory Support
Scripture Reference: Exodus 17:8–13
When Israel fought Amalek:
Moses lifted his hands (prayer)
Israel won when his hands were raised
They struggled when his hands dropped
Aaron and Hur:
Supported Moses
Held up his arms
Helped secure victory
What This Represents
Moses → Leadership
Aaron & Hur → Intercessors
Raised hands → Prayer
Battle → Spiritual warfare
Victory required shared strength.
Why Intercession for Leaders Matters
Leaders face intense spiritual attack
Leaders carry heavy responsibility
Intercession provides covering
Strong leaders lead to strong communities
When leaders are supported:
The church advances
The mission continues
The enemy is resisted
Intercession Beyond Leadership
Intercession is not only for leaders.
We are called to stand in the gap for:
Families
Marriages
Children
Communities
Nations
When we intercede:
We create spiritual protection
We push back darkness
We release God’s will
The Impact of Intercession
1. It Shapes Lives, Leaders, and Nations
Scripture Reference: 1 Timothy 2:1–4
Intercession:
Creates peace
Opens doors for the gospel
Aligns with God’s desire for salvation
2. It Releases God’s Intervention
Example: Acts 12:5–7
The church prayed → Peter was set free.
Intercession:
Invites supernatural breakthrough
Opens doors for God to act
3. It Brings Breakthrough and Revival
Scripture Reference: James 5:16–18
Elijah prayed → the nation shifted
Prayer changed circumstances
Intercession:
Releases revival
Transforms situations
Moves heaven on earth
Living as an Intercessor
Intercession:
Does not change God’s will
Releases God’s will
When we pray:
Heaven moves
Breakthrough happens
God’s purposes are established
This is how revival begins.
